The Tigers earned a statement win over Trinity in a highly anticipated Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Friday night. The Colorado College women's basketball team improved to 10-4 after the 63-49 over Trinity to end TU's 5-0 conference undefeated record.
CC extended their win streak to four straight, bringing their home record to 6-1 on the season.
Two weeks ago, Trinity was the No. 10 team in the nation and was looking to take over prominent positioning in the conference standings; however,
Zoë Tomlinson and
Rose Koehler had stellar nights, combining for 26 points (13 each) and led CC to their biggest win of the year.
"Tonight's hard-fought win came after a week of solid preparation by our entire team," head coach
Katherine Auguste said. "Everyone contributed to this result and everyone believed. It was fun to watch the ball movement and selfless play by so many, evidenced by five of our players having two or more assists."
Tomlinson recorded her 12th double-double on the year after swiping 16 rebounds. She currently leads the country in double-doubles. Koehler played a career-high 31 minutes and looked like anything but a first-year player in how she managed the game and made plays on both ends of the floor. The Bend, OR native had a career-high six rebounds, three assists and three steals to go with her 13 points.
In the first quarter, both teams struggled to get either offense jumpstarted. CC shot 33.33 percent from the floor but held TU to only two made shots. The Tigers led 10-9 going into the second, which was a much more explosive quarter than the prior.
CC scored 25 points and shot 56.25 percent compared to TU's 40.00 percent.
Kayla Mackel went off from three-point range, draining three shots from long range. She finished the game with 12 points, a rebound, an assist and a steal.
The Tigers had a 35-27 lead going into the halftime break.
CC wouldn't lose the lead for the remainder of the game. They continued to shoot the ball well in the third, outscoring Trinity 16-10 despite a burst from Trinity to bring the game back within three points with 6:26 to play.
To end the third, CC went on a run 14-3 run to seal the eventual win.
The starting five combined for 49 of the 63 points. Healey Bledsoe was one rebound shy of her season-high of eight. She finished the game with seven, along with six points and two assists.
"Perhaps the biggest shout-out of the night is to our team defense that was so focused on neutralizing Trinity's perimeter shooting threats," Auguste said. "They are an outstanding offensive team and doing great things shooting the ball right now – which makes our defensive execution tonight all the more special. Rose's crazy defensive pressure and three steals put an exclamation mark on our team effort!"
Trinity came into the game with the best three-point shooting percentage in the SCAC, averaging 35.7 percent per game. CC held them to 15.4 percent (4-26).
CC's four-game winning streak is their longest since last season when they won four straight from Feb. 12-25.
The Tigers will close their homestand against Schreiner on Sunday at 3 p.m. MT.
