The Colorado College women's basketball team extended their win streak to five games with a 63-46 victory over Schreiner Sunday evening in Reid Arena.
Despite having 22 turnovers, the Tigers forced 28 of their own and outrebounded the Mountaineers 46-28.
CC's defense held Schreiner to 12 points and 19.04 percent shooting in the latter two quarters. The Mountaineers made only four shots from the floor, and the Tigers were able to pull away and improve to 7-1 at home and 5-1 within conference play.
"We battled through a tough shooting night as a team and found a way to get the job done," head coach
Katherine Auguste said."
Healy Bledsoe led us in so many ways to contribute, and her on-court leadership is truly invaluable. From steals to assists to rebounds, she left her mark on this game.
Zoë Tomlinson had another efficient night and got her hands on so many rebounds in addition to influencing the game through her ability to not only score in the paint, but to facilitate out of that spot."
With the win on Sunday on top of the Friday victory over Trinity, the Tigers take over second place in the conference standings heading into their four-game road trip.
CC got an 18-14 lead at the end of the first quarter after some decent three-point shooting by
Kayla Mackel that made it an 18-8 lead with 2:46 to play in the quarter. The Mountaineers ended the first on a 6-0 run.
In the second, CC shot 33.33 percent from the floor, but Schreiner shot 61.54 percent and overtook the lead with 58 seconds left before the half. However,
Zoë Tomlinson drilled a buzzer-beater jump shot as time expired to regain the 35-34 lead for the Tigers heading into the halftime break.
After the half, the Tiger defense locked down the Mountaineers and did enough on offense to pull ahead in the third and fourth quarters. Schreiner was limited to 20 percent shooting (2-10) in the third and 18.18 percent (2-11) in the fourth.
Tomlinson once again proved why she is one of the best players in the SCAC as she recorded her 13th double-double of the season. The New York native finished the game with 20 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
Freshman
Rose Koehler followed it up with 12 points, five rebounds, an assist, two blocks and three steals.
Audrey Bayston was a beast on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds, nine points, two assists, and three steals.
"Rose brought energy on defense and left her mark in the scoring category as well," Auguste said. "She is consistently finding ways to positively impact the tempo of the game, and we benefit from that greatly. Kayla and Audrey again combined for a solid effort from behind the arc, which really opens things up for our drives and post-play."
CC is 8-2 in the last 10 games, tied for the best record in the SCAC during that time. The Tigers will play their next four games on the road, starting with Austin College on Jan. 12 in Sherman, Texas.
