CC Falls in Final Seconds to No. 20 Whitman

The Colorado College women's basketball team fell to No. 20 (WBCA Coaches Poll) Whitman College on Saturday, Dec. 9, in a close 53-54 contest that came down to the final shot in the game in Walla Walla, WA.

Zoë Tomlinson had the final shot at the buzzer and almost nailed the fadeaway from the post, but the ball hit the back iron and fell out.

"Our team's resilience and composure showed tonight," head coach Katherine Auguste said. "We had impactful play from many when we were down against a really talented opponent in Whitman. Healy [Bledsoe], Kyle [Rowland], and Isa [Nelson] did an incredible job handling tough defensive pressure the entire night, and each hit key shots as well."

CC overcame a 10-point deficit entering the fourth quarter and outscored Whitman 19-11 in the final 10 minutes of play. The Tigers took the 46-45 lead with 4:47 left to play and built it to three points thanks to a Healy Bledsoe three-pointer after it was tied 47-47.

Eventually, the Blues retook the lead at 2:32 and were able to hold off another comeback by the Tigers.

At the half, CC trailed 23-27 but saved their best shooting for the second half, shooting a combined 40.8 percent in the latter two quarters.

CC ended the game shooting 35.4 percent but was 40.0 percent from three-point range (8-20).

Tomlinson led the team with 13 points and 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. Freshman Isa Nelson was right behind her with 11 points, four rebounds and 50 percent from long range (2-4).

CC outrebounded Whitman 33-31. Kyle Rowland collected six season-high rebounds to go with her six points, three assists and one steal.

The Tiger defense did a fantastic job in the fourth quarter to force the game to be close in the final seconds. They held the Blues to only three made shots and a 23.08 field goal percentage in the quarter.

CC had two players be named to the WHIT Classic All-Tournament Team, Zoë Tomlinson and Audrey Bayston represented the Tigers. Tomlinson averaged 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Bayston averaged eight points and six boards per contest.

"Zoë and Audrey had amazing inside/outside play and great synergy on the offensive end – it was great seeing them recognized as All-Tournament team, definitely deserved," Auguste said."

All three losses this season for CC have come against ranked opponents. The Tigers will tip off SCAC play when they host Texas Lutheran at Reid Arena on Friday, Dec. 15.
