The Colorado College men's basketball team relied on 11 players scoring down Southwestern on the road in a down-to-the-wire Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) matchup in Georgetown, TX. The Tigers ultimately downed the Pirates.
The contest came down to the wire. The Tigers had the lead with seconds left, and the Pirates heaved up a three-pointer for the probable win, but the shot fell short. CC improved to 11-7 (5-4 SCAC) on the season. Friday is the Tigers' fourth consecutive win.
It is the Tigers' longest winning streak since the 2016-17 season when CC won four straight from January. 6-15, 2016.
"It was a gutsy win," head coach
Jeff Conarroe said. "Our guys are showing great character and discipline. We pounded the ball in the post in the second half, took care of the ball, and really rebounded the ball well. We have to shoot better from the free throw line, but good teams can win ugly and make big plays when it matters; we did that tonight."
CC ended the first half down 31-35 despite outshooting the Pirates 13-9. Southwestern made 15 free throws in the first half, the difference maker heading into the halftime break.
The Tigers shot the basketball well overall, especially in the second half. They shot 50.00 percent from the floor despite making only 30.77 percent of their free throws in the half.
Dinari Boykin and
Devin Philio led the team with nine points each. Philio also nabbed a team-high seven rebounds and three assists. Boykin finished the game with five boards and two steals.
CC held Southwestern to 33.33 percent shooting in the second half, and once, when they took the lead with 7:46 left in the game thanks to an
Asher Nofziger jumper, they never lost the lead again. There were eight lead changes in the second half before CC finally took command.
The CC lead was as many as six points with 2:07 left in the game when
Scott Ruegg drilled a clutch jump shot as the shot clock expired to put the Tigers up 63-57. That would end up being the last bucket for CC, as the defense has to win the game for the remaining two minutes.
SWU made a three and got to the charity stripe to bring the game within two with 43 seconds left, but the eventual try to win the game fell short at the buzzer as CC held on to win 63-61.
"I'm proud of the guys," Conarroe said. "It's been a long haul with four out of five weekends on the road since Christmas in three time zones. But it has helped us grow and that's what we wanted. No time to relax, another big one on Sunday."
The Tigers are 5-3 on the road this year and have won four straight away from Reid Arena. CC will close their six-game road trip on Sunday against Texas Lutheran in Seguin, TX, at 11 a.m. MT.
