The Tigers' winning streak continues. The Colorado College women's basketball team defeated Southwestern 58-43 on Friday evening for their eighth-straight victory.
Last year, the Tigers won eight games, culminating on Feb.5 in the win on No. 1 Trinity. That winning streak started with a 93-37 win over Southwestern. On Friday in Georgetown, Texas, the Tigers downed the Pirates again sixth-straight victory over SWU.
Zoë Tomlinson shined again, leading the team with 17 points and 13 rebounds. It's her 15th double-double of the season, tied for the most in the country.
The New York native shot 50 percent from the floor and the Tigers shot a combined 47.9 percent over the four quarters while holding the Pirates to 39.0 percent.
"Southwestern played us very tough tonight and our defense had to step up when they came out hitting shots," head coach
Katherine Auguste said. "Kayla [Mackel| and Healy led the way for us with a combined five steals and both had extremely efficient nights on the offensive side of the ball as well – they generated great momentum at key times in the game. Zoë had a steady, impactful presence in the paint and we certainly rely on her ability to control the boards and get high-percentage looks."
Healy Bledsoe racked up nine points, two boards, an assist and three steals. Five Tigers scored six or more points.
The game was tied 17-17 after the first quarter. Seven of Bledsoe's points were scored in the first. The Summit, Oregon native was all over the court, scoring on fast breaks off steals and hitting a crucial three-pointer with 2:40 left in the quarter to put the Tigers up 16-13.
In the second, CC's defense held steadfast and limited SWU to only five points and 28.57 percent shooting. The Pirates made only two buckets in the quarter, and the Tigers went on a 7-1 run over the final four minutes to go into the half with a 33-22 lead.
CC's shooting stayed consistent for the latter two quarters; the Tigers never lost the lead in the second half, and the lead was never brought down to single digits from the 8:00 mark of the third quarter.
Tomlinson led all scorers with eight points in the second half as CC cruised, building their lead up to as many as 19, eventually winning 58-43.
The Tigers outrebounded their opponents 32-22 and also scored 20 of their points off 20 forced turnovers. CC ended the night with 11 steals.
Kayla Mackel had two of them, including seven points and two rebounds.
CC will close the weekend on Sunday in Seguin, Texas, in a rematch against Texas Lutheran. The Tigers' last loss was back on Dec. 15, 2023, in a 66-69 battle against the Bulldogs that came down to the final shot.
Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. MT.
