The Colorado College men's lacrosse team opened up their season on the road at Elmhurst on Friday in Elmhurst, Illinois, but ultimately fell to the Bluejays 14-13.
CC entered the fourth quarter down 7-11 after giving up four goals in the third quarter and almost came from behind in the final minutes. The Tigers scored six goals in the fourth quarter and outshot Elmhurst 13-4.
The comeback was cut short as CC failed to score in the final four minutes to tie it up.
Thomas Power led the team with four goals and an assist.
Max Carneal added three goals of his own, including the goal with 4:13 left to make it a one-goal game.
The first quarter consisted of both teams trading blows for the first four goals before CC took a 5-2 lead after scoring three unanswered over five minutes. The Bluejays responded with a run, scoring five straight points and stretching into the second quarter.
CC finally answered with Carneal's man-up goal with 5:08 left in the second to make it 7-6 Elmhurst.
Matt Hudson tied up the game at 7-7 two minutes later with an assist from
Brian Bonnist.
Both teams continued to go on their runs as CC was down by four goals entering the final quarter. Power scored back-to-back goals to open up the fourth. Hudson nabbed his own to tie it up 11-10 before Power tied the game with his fourth goal with 11:25 remaining.
Despite a highly competitive contest, Elmhurst scored three of the remaining five goals to seal the win and hand the Tigers their first loss of the season.
The Tigers will travel to Aurora, Illinois, to take on the Aurora Spartans on Sunday, Feb. 18. Face-off time is set for 11 a.m. MT.
