Tigers Collect First Win Of 2024 Against Aurora

On Sunday, the Colorado College men's lacrosse team nabbed its first win of the 2024 season in an impressive 15-7 win over Aurora University in Aurora, IL.

Another five-point performance led the Tigers from Thomas Power, who had 10 through the first two games. Power scored three goals and racked up two assists; CC finished the day out, shooting Aurora 41-36.

"It's not easy playing on less than two days rest against a perennial NCAA Tournament program like Aurora," Mike Horowitz said. "I couldn't be more proud of the resiliency and relentless mindset the team showed today."

Goalkeeper Ben Anastos collected his first win of the year after recording 15 saves in his 53 minutes in the crease.

CC scored five goals in both the first and second quarters while limiting Aurora to only seven shots in the second after the Spartans shot 14 balls in the first.

Power and Charlie Faldi scored the first four goals for CC, each scoring after the other. Power got the Tigers on the scoreboard with 13:42 remaining in the first quarter. Faldi followed up with his first score a minute and 11 seconds later.

Faldie finished the game with three goals. Power had three goals and two assists.

After four straight goals from CC to start the game, Aurora responded with two goals of their own to make it a 4-2 contest with 6:45 remaining in the first. Noah Beecher shut down the temporary momentum by finding the back of the net less than a minute after the Spartan's second goal to make it 5-2.

CC fed five more goals in the second quarter to go into the halftime break up 10-4. Power, Beecher, Trevor Mackles, Faldi and Matt Hudson all found the back of the net. The Tigers put up 15 shots in the second quarter and 29 in the first half.

The second half proved to be much of the same for the Tigers; Dylan Brown scored the first goal of the third quarter to put CC up 11-4. It was Brown's first of the season. Aurora responded with their fifth goal, but CC countered with back-to-back goals, the first from Braydon Ellis with 11:11 to go and the other from Karten Nyrady with 3:12 left. Both goals were unassisted.

In the fourth, CC closed the game with goals from Beecher and freshman Nick Johnson, his first career goal.

Mackles was phenomenal in face-off opportunities. The sophomore won 14 of 18 faceoffs as Charlie Harrington also went 3-3 in faceoffs. CC was 20-24 in clears and grabbed more ground balls than Aurora (38-24).

CC improves to 1-1 on the season and will host CSU Pueblo on Saturday, Feb. 24, in the home opener at Washburn Field.
