The Colorado College men's lacrosse team picked up its first home win of the season in a 22-4 rolling of DII CSU Pueblo. The Tigers move to 2-1 and claim their second-consecutive victory after downing Aurora for their first win last weekend.
"We only have five opportunities to defend Washburn field this season, and it's so critical we make each one count," head coach
Mike Horowitz said.
Charlie Faldi backed up his three-goal performance against the Spartans with a four-goal game against the Thunderwolves, matching his career-high. The sophomore ended the day with five points, including an assist.
Thomas Power, the leading scorer this season, had another spectacular day with the stick, dishing out three goals. He now has 10 on the year.
Dylan Brown nabbed his first multi-goal game of the year after finding the back of the net on three occasions. The Ontario native also had an assist, giving him four points on the afternoon.
The Tigers never trailed, despite neither team scoring in the first few minutes of the opening quarter. Power popped the cap off for the CC offense with 8:26 left on an unassisted goal. CC would score the first four goals of the game after
Noah Beecher, Faldi and Brown each slung balls to the back of the net.
CSU Pueblo finally got on the scoreboard with 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter. However,
Braydon Ellis countered 32 seconds later, scoring with eight seconds remaining to put CC up 5-1 at the break.
CC scored eight more unanswered goals to bring their advantage to 12 goals heading into the half. Faldi scored three of his four goals in the second, and Brown scored on a man-up opportunity.
In the third, the Pack scored back-to-back to bring the game back within 10.
Max Carneal and
Nick Bell each scored for the Tigers. It was Bell's first career goal. The other freshman to score for the first time was
Callum Iverson in the fourth, with seven minutes to play to make it 19-5.
CC dominated the fourth quarter, putting up seven goals to CSU Pueblo's one. The Tigers eventually cruised to the 22-5 win and improved to 6-0 all-time over the Pack.
The Tigers outshot their opponents 46-29, including 26 shots on goal.
Trevor Mackles dominated in faceoffs, winning nine of 12.
Charlie Harrington and Ryan Trepsso each won seven of the nine they were a part of.
"This game gave us the opportunity to get better in all phases of the game, which is going to be critical going into a long homestand," Horowitz said.
Up next is the first of four home games in March, starting with Balwin Wallace on Tuesday, March 5th, at Washburn Field. CC is 6-4 at home in the last 10 games.
