For the second consecutive game, the Colorado College men's lacrosse team successfully defended its home turf after a decisive 19-13 over Baldwin Wallace University on Tuesday evening.
"There's no better home-field advantage than Washburn Field," head coach
Mike Horowitz said. "We talked about starting fast, and I don't think we could've started any faster."
Freshman
Matt Hudson and sophomore Brayden Ellis each had six goals. Hudson's six goals are a career-high for the Edina, MN native. Ellis finished the game with seven points, including an assist, which is also a career-high.
Ellis' day started in the first quarter, scoring three times, including the day's second goal after
Thomas Power put CC up 1-0 with 12:21 left in the quarter. Two of Ellis' first-quarter goals were unassisted, and the Tigers went into the second with a 7-1 lead.
"
Braydon Ellis deserves performances like the one he had," Horowitz said. "His relentless attitude and work ethic inspire me and the team daily."
Baldwin Wallace kicked it into second gear in the second quarter, outsourcing the Tigers 6-3 and bringing the game back within three goals (10-7) when both teams went in for the halftime break.
The momentum appeared to shift towards the Yellow Jackets, but then floodgates opened for the Tigers after the half.
Five of Hudson's goals came in the third quarter within seven minutes. It was an insane scoring spree for No. 22. Hudson kicked off the onslaught with an assisted goal from
Charlie Faldi with 13:08 left in the quarter. He scored three consecutive times until Ellis snuck in his own with 9:57 left to make it 14-7. Hudson scored two more, the final one with 7:56 left in the quarter, increasing the Tiger lead to nine goals.
CC outscored their opponents 7-1 in the third and outshot the Yellow Jackets 15-3. They entered the final quarter with a 17-8 lead.
The Yellow Jackets attempted another comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring four straight to cut the lead down to five goals. But a final score from Ellis, with 3:05 remaining, sealed the victory for the Tigers.
CC ended the game with 51 shots to BWU's 30.
Dylan Brown had four points (three assists and a goal), Faldi had a three-assist outing and
Trevor Mackles finished the day with a goal and an assist.
Mackles won 25 of 33 faceoffs. Goalkeeper
Ben Anastos got the win after saving eight shots.
The Tigers improve to 3-1 on the season and will aim next for DeSales University on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the 60th Anniversary Game.
