The 2024 women's lacrosse season kicked off in Claremont, California, on Friday evening. The Colorado College Tigers brought a battle to No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer but ultimately fell 10-7.
CC outscored the Sagehend 7-2 in the second and third quarters, but a solid first and final quarter from the home team was too much in the end. The Tigers were led by freshman
Charlotte Iler, who scored three goals in her first-ever collegiate game. The Simsbury, CT native put three shots on the net, and all found the back of the net. She finished the game with four shots and a ground ball.
Pomona-Pitzer got an early 5-0 lead, holding CC scoreless in the first quarter. The Tigers came storming back in the second, scoring three straight, starting with
Amanda Roan's first goal on a free-position play. Iler notched back-to-back scores less than two minutes from each other, including her second when
Kendall Havill found her and racked up her first assist of the season.
The Sagehens answered with their sixth goal, scoring 6-3 with two minutes left in the half.
Tobin Lonergan scored 40 seconds later after the ball was redirected off the Sagehen goalie back into the net. That brought the game back within two scores as the teams went in for the halftime break.
CC scored three goals to Pomona's one in the third quarter to tie the game at seven heading into the fourth. Iller scored her third goal of the game, followed up with Havill connecting on her first two of the season, back-to-back with four minutes to play.
The Tigers could not put another one on the board in the fourth as the Sagehens sank three more to put the game away.
CC finished with 20 shots while goaltender
Cassidy Schnaufer racked up 13 saves in net. Havill and Iler led the team with three points each. Lonergan finished with two after her goal and an assist.
CC will have to bounce back to take on Rhodes College on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. MT from Claremont, CA.
