It came down to the wire for the second game in a row at Reid Arena, but the Colorado College men's basketball team fell to St. Thomas 75-72 on Sunday, Feb. 4.
Â
CC had the lead entering the second half, but a strong shooting performance by St. Thomas elevated them to a win over the Tigers.
Â
Asher Nofziger led the team with a career-high 21 points. The Cherry Creek High School graduate finished with a double-double after racking up ten boards, an assist, and a block.Â
Â
Dinari Boykin followed suit with 17 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.Â
Â
CC was down by two points with 10 seconds to go; Boykin intercepted an inbound pass and got fouled to go to the line with a chance to tie it up but converted on only one to make it 72-73. St. Thomas got fouled on the following possession, made both free throws and then Boykin's last-second three to tie the game hit the back rim as the Celts escaped with the victory.Â
Â
The Tigers continued to show why they are the best rebounding team in the SCAC. In the first half, CC commanded the presence on the board, swiping 11 offensive boards and outrebounded the Celts 23-19.Â
Â
CC had nine second-chance points in the first half.Â
Â
UST got an early lead a couple of minutes in when they hit their first shot to make it 2-1, but two free throws by
Dinari Boykin gave the Tigers the lead, and they didn't lose it for the remainder of the first half.Â
Â
After the loss to Centenary on Friday, when CC shot 23.3 percent from long range (30 attempts), the Tigers made four of their first five shots from long range.
Asher Nofziger,
Trey Crawford, and
Edgar Romero nailed CC's first threes.
Â
The Tigers' lead was 12 with 3:45 to go in the first after
Kevin Dittman nailed his own three.Â
Â
UST was held to 34.9 percent shooting in the first half, including 25 percent from long range. The Tigers didn't shoot much better, making only 39.4 percent of their shots; however, seven conversions from the free-throw line helped maintain the lead.Â
Â
CC shot the ball well in the second half, but UST shot 56.7 percent from the floor in the second to ultimately take the lead back and win late.Â
Â
The Tigers will travel to Texas next for their final road trip of the year when they take on No. 7 Trinity on Friday, Feb. 11
