The Colorado College men's basketball team swept the regular season series against Schreiner with an 80-74 win over the Mountaineers on Friday night in Kerrville, Texas.
Four Tigers scored in double digits and finished the game shooting 53.2 percent from the floor, including a big first half when they shot 63.33 percent.
Sophomore
Dinari Boykin led all scorers with 19 points in only 21 minutes on the floor. The Baltimore, Maryland, native racked up six boards, one block, and an assist.
Three other CC starters,
Scott Ruegg,
Asher Nofziger and
Devin Philio, scored 12 points or more. Ruegg led the trio with 14 points, a board, and three assists. Philio led CC with five rebounds and finished the game with 11 points, two assists and a steal. Nofziger finished with 14 points, one rebound and three assists.
"Tonight was another great effort on the road," head coach
Jeff Conarroe said. "I'm super proud of our team's response after a tough weekend last weekend. I thought we showed great resilience, came together and did a lot of winning things tonight. It was great to see such a balanced attack, one of our season low on turnovers, a great second half on the glass."
The Tigers had a tremendous first half offensively, scoring 46 points and hitting 63.33 percent of their shots from the floor. CC got an early 16-8 lead five minutes into the game when
Edgar Romero drilled a three to cap a 9-3 run over two minutes.
CC rode that way into the halftime break, never losing the lead and building it out to 12 points with 8:56 in the half when Ruegg was on the receiving end of a steal caused by Philio and finished with a layup in the lane.
The Tigers finished the game with 12 steals, tied for their season high. The team had 12 steals against UC Santa Cruz back on Jan. 18.
In the second half, the Mountaineers clawed their way back within a bucket with under seven minutes to go, but the Tigers never lost the lead. After Schreiner brought it back within a bucket, Philio scored a nice layup in the lane and completed a three-point play. Gavin Carted followed it up with a jumper a few minutes later to bring the lead back out to seven.
Schreiner brought it back within one score once more with under a minute to go. CC led 75-74 when Ruegg drilled a clutch three-pointer with 24 seconds left on the clock to ice the game and CC ultimately won 80-74.
"We stayed the course with points in the paint and FT line for the entire game, and it was the difference in the end," Conarroe said. "Schreiner is a really good offensive team and I thought we did a great job defensively tonight despite their success shooting the ball from 3. We feel lucky to get out of there with a win. Our guys earned this one, no question. They made the plays and did the little things!"
The Tigers improved to 13-9 and ended a two-game skid. Next is No. 8 Trinity on Sunday, Feb. 11, in San Antonio, Texas.
