After eight straight wins, the No. 25 Colorado College women's lacrosse team faced a tough challenge from No. 9 The College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey, on Thursday afternoon. Despite a valiant effort by CC, the Lions overcame a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter and scored five consecutive goals to pull ahead, ending the Tigers' winning streak.
Kendall Havill,
Tobin Lonergan, and
Charlotte Iler each scored three goals as the game went back and forth for all four quarters, and each team seemed to dominate by quarter. The opening 15 minutes belonged to the Tigers as CC jumped out to a 4-1 lead led by two goals from Lonergan. The junior scored the opening goal on a woman-down situation with 12:02 remaining. TCNJ responded less than a minute later; however, three straight scores from
Grace Bean, Iler and Lonergan put the Tigers up by three heading into the second.
The Lions swung back, scoring four woman-up goals in the second. Seven goals were scored in the quarter between the two teams, with TCNJ scoring four to bring the game within one heading into the halftime break.
TCNJ kept its momentum entering the third by striking back-to-back goals quickly to take the first lead in the game. With 10:02 left in the quarter, now down by one, Lonergan took advantage of an opposing penalty and evened the game up 8-8 on a woman-up goal, her third score. The Vermont native finished with six points after racking up three assists, one shy of her season-high four assists.
The Lions briefly regained the advantage with 7:29 remaining in the quarter, and CC countered with its best run of the day. Led by Iler, the Tigers scored four straight goals to tie its biggest lead of the afternoon. Havill dished out an admirable unassisted goal to retire the third quarter, and Iler opened up the fourth with back-to-back scores, followed by an assist on Ortman's goal to make it 12-9.
Moreover, the Ortman goal with 11:51 left would initiate an eight-minute offensive drought for the Tigers as the Lions stormed back, scoring five straight goals to take the lead and ultimately the win. Havill made it a one-goal contest with 3:11 left, but a solid defensive outing in the final minutes kept the Lions ahead, ending CC's eight-game win streak.
Lonergan led the team with six points, followed by Havill, who had four with three goals and an assist. Ortman scored one, caused three turnovers, and picked up three ground balls.
Sofia Mancino led the team with six draw controls.
Healy Bledsoe led the Tigers with six ground balls, a career high for the Bend, Oregon native.
CC drops to 10-4 on the year and will look to get back in the win column after a couple of days off when it takes on The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, April 21st.
