Tigers Fall To Catholic In The Final Minute

Box Score It was a battle to the end in the nation's capital on Sunday afternoon. The Colorado College women's lacrosse team fell to the Catholic University of America 10-9 after a last-minute goal by the Cardinals.

Kendall Havill was a standout for the Tigers, scoring four goals. However, despite the nine lead changes, the game didn't swing in CC's favor. Catholic managed to score three of the final four goals, taking the lead with a mere 22 seconds remaining.

The Cardinals started the game with a bang, scoring the first three goals. However, CC didn't back down and responded with a Devon Ortman goal with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter. Ortman then struck again with 1:54 left; both were unassisted goals. Havill added to the tally with her first goal, giving CC a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

At the start of the second, Ortman collected her third goal with 9:45 remaining in the half. After the initial run by both teams, the game started to exchange leads rapidly. Catholic jumped back in front with back-to-back goals, making the game a 5-4 with under six minutes to play in the half. A few minutes later, Havill scored uniquely in a woman down situation with 31 seconds left, and then in a woman-up scenario, she found the back of the net with two seconds left on the clock. That gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead heading into the halftime break.

Catholic regained momentum after the break, as the offensive pendulum swung in favor of the Cardinals. Catholic struck on back-to-back goals to take an 8-7 lead with 8:26 left. After the seniors led the scoring for CC in the first half, the first-year players got involved. Sofia Mancino and Charlotte Iler responded with consecutive scores, stealing the lead for the Tigers with 1:24 remaining. CC kept the 8-7 lead at the end of the third.

In the fourth, Catholic did a respectable job limiting the Tigers' shot opportunities to only two, a game-low for the Tigers. The Cardinals tied the game up 8-8 with 10:17 remaining. Six minutes passed before another goal was scored; this time, Havill put CC on time for the final time with 4:28 left.

The Cardinals scored the final two goals of the game, including the game-winner with 22 seconds remaining, to hand CC its second-straight loss. The Tigers dropped to 10-5 and will finish out their conference play next week on the road with a trip to Wisconsin to take on UW River Falls.
