On Friday night, the Colorado College women's lacrosse team pronounced their paramountcy in River Falls, Wisconsin. With five different Tigers scoring multiple goals, the No. 1 seeded team in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament powered their way to Saturday's championship game, triumphing over UW-Eau Claire with a commanding 22-8 victory.Â
Â
Sophomore
Grace Bean led the charge for the Tigers with a career-high five goals, four of which were scored in the first half. The Boston native has been in top form, scoring multiple goals for the third consecutive game. Since April 26th, Bean has been a force, contributing 10 goals and two assists. Her performance on Friday saw her netting the five goals from just seven shots.Â
Â
The freshman duo of
Charlotte Iler and
Sofia Mancino each scored four goals. It was a career-high for Mancino as she also grabbed two assists, while Iler added one of her own. The pair continues to be one of the best first-year pairings in the region, combining for 77 goals and 26 assists on the season.Â
"We had some very strong performances from our first and second-year players as they put up a combined 13 goals in the game," head coach
Susan Stuart said.
The final Tigers to score multiple times was a senior pairing of
Kendall Havill and
Bridget Hanley. Havill continued to extend her record-breaking season with the most goals in Tiger history. She now has 79 on the season, currently 13th in the country.Â
Â
CC stalled offensively for the first seventeen minutes of the game, scoring only one goal when Bean grabbed her first with 11:43 left in the first after an assist from
Devon Ortman. The Blugolds tied it up 1-1 with 8:51 remaining. Five minutes later, Iler struck after coming from the back of the net, but CC didn't look back.Â
Â
The Tigers ended the first quarter by scoring five consecutive times in the final three minutes and 49 seconds. At the start of the second, CC continued to roll when Mancino scored twice, and Havill racked up her second of the game to make it 9-1 with 11:27 left in the half. UW-Eau Claire reduced the lead to seven with under 10 minutes to play, but CC countered with five goals to close the half and went into the break with a 15-4 advantage.Â
Â
In the third, Havill dished her third goal of the game a minute and 13 seconds into the quarter. The Tigers and Bluegolds exchanged blows over the next few minutes, but CC took advantage of some woman-up opportunities as
Bridget Hanley and
Caroline Shay scored to balloon the lead to 18-6.Â
Â
Kelsey Shankle,
Meilani Molina, and Hanley found the back of the net in the fourth quarter to cruise CC to the 22-8 win. This was the Tigers' third consecutive win and their seventh straight against a conference opponent. In the WIAC this season, the Tigers have dished out seven 20-goal games, holding their opponents to under eight goals or less in each game.Â
Â
The Tigers finished Friday outshooting the Blugolds 41-18, including 28-13 shots on goal. Havill finished the game with a team-high three assists, six points and a ground ball.Â
Â
Ortman led the squad with four ground balls to move her to 13th all-time in CC history with 115 in her historic career.Â
"This team has some great chemistry and are very fun to watch at both ends of the field," Stuart said. "I think we showed a lot of our speed and athleticism in the win today. The defense has some very good moments of one on one defense and several really nice interceptions and the transition game was on point. I think we had some really good well set up goals because of the quick, sharp ball movement. Our goal is to improve on today's performance in pace and tenacity and we are very excited to play for the championship tomorrow."
Â
CC will play the winner of the UW-La Crosse and UW-River Falls semifinal matchup in the WIAC Tournament Championship game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. MT.
