Tigers Claim WIAC Tournament Crown

It was a very sweet night in River Falls, Wisconsin. The Colorado College women's lacrosse program sealed a perfect conference record and the name of "champions" as they won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament by downing the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 16-5.

The Tigers demonstrated dominance, outscoring their opponents 38-13 over the weekend and ending the conference season with a staggering score of 165-32 against WIAC opponents. This victory also marked their first conference tournament title since their triumph in the SCAC Tournament in 2021.

"The team came out with probably their best start of all season," head coach Susan Stuart said. "Right out of the gates, the draw team and offense took control, making few errors and capitalizing on every opportunity. Today our upperclassmen set the pace early and played like it was their last game, but hoping for more."

CC outshot UW-La Crosse 38-11, and senior captains Kendall Havill and Devon Ortman led the team with three goals each…a very fitting potential end to a historic run for both players, who will continue their careers at the DI level next season.

Havill performed excellently on both ends of the field, dishing out the three goals on only five shots, grabbing three ground balls, and causing two turnovers. Ortman played to her identity and strengths, finishing the game with four points, an assist, three ground balls, and six draw controls.

Tobin Lonergan also returned to scoring form, grabbing her first multi-goal game since April 18th. The Vermont native finished with two goals, an assist, one ground ball and a caused turnover.

In a stark contrast to the semifinals, the Tiger offense burst out of the gates for the early lead. Lonergan was the first to strike, putting CC on the board with a goal just 44 seconds after the initial whistle. Havill followed suit, finding the back of the net a mere 22 seconds later with an assist from Charlotte Iler. Lonergan scored again to put CC up 3-0 with 11:45 remaining in the first in a woman-down situation.

CC's offensive burst continued. Sofia Mancino and Caroline Shay scored 1:32 apart from each other. Ortman assisted on Mancino's goal and then recorded her first goal of the night with 7:53 remaining. The Tigers ended the first three more goals to take a 9-2 lead into the second.

The metaphorical foot kept to the gas pedal in the second quarter, as CC shut out the Eagles while scoring four additional goals from Iler, Bridget Hanley, Havill, and Ortman. At the half, the lead ballooned to 13-2.

By the second half, the Tigers had the running clock. Meilani Molina scored back-to-back goals in the third, making her the fourth Tiger to dish out multiple goals in the game. La Crosse scored twice in the final eight minutes, cutting the lead down to ten, but Healy Bledsoe found the back of the net on a tough unassisted goal to close the night and cap the 16-5.

Bledsoe tied her season-high four draw controls, Mancino also grabbed four balls off the draw.

CC finished with 30 shots on goal, 24 ground balls, six caused turnovers, 19 draw controls and only 14 turnovers.

"We accomplished several team goals in the game and are hoping this constant improvement will help if get an opportunity to play after this weekend," Stuart said.

The Tigers do not have an automatic qualifying spot in the NCAA DIII Tournament because the WIAC is in its first year sponsoring women's lacrosse. CC will look for an at-large bid, which will be announced during the selection show on Monday at 8:30 a.m. MT.
