Tigers Sink Pirates, Bring Winning Streak To Seven Games

On Friday night, the Colorado College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games after defeating Southwestern University 58-45 in Georgetown, Texas. The Tigers have accumulated two seven-game winning streaks in the last two seasons.

Three Tigers scored in double-digits, led by senior Zoë Tomlinson, who dished 16 points and seven rebounds. Junior Kayla Mackel scored 12 points and finished with four rebounds and two steals. Senior Healy Bledsoe racked up 10 points, two rebounds, four steals and an assist.

Tomlinson has 1,072 career rebounds and is 17 away from tying the record for most in program history. Lorna Kollmeyer is currently first all-time with 1,099. Earlier this season, Tomlinson became the third player in CC history to surpass 1,000 career boards.

CC shot the basketball well out of the gates despite neither team scoring in the first two minutes. Once, when Tomlinson scored her first field goal on the evening with 6:21 left, the Tigers never trailed for the remainder of the game.

The Tigers shot 42.11 percent in the first quarter, held the Pirates to 36.36 percent, and only four made field goals. Bledsoe dominated the first quarter, scoring all 10 points and shooting 4-6 from the floor while grabbing three steals. The Bend, OR native helped give the Tigers a 19-8 lead heading into the second quarter.

CC increased their lead to 15 heading into the halftime break after limiting the Pirates to only 16.76 percent of their shots in the second. Tomlinson led the way with four points, while senior Laura Strenk and sophomore Isa Nelson combined for the other six points as the Tigers carried a 29-14 advantage into the break.

Mackel shined in the third quarter, shooting 50 percent from long range (2-4) and leading the team with eight points. The Houston native, combined with Tomlinson, scored all of CC's points in the frame and worked the lead up to 17.

Sophomore Willa McLaughlin and Mackel led the team in the fourth as CC ballooned the lead to 50-26 with 7:48 left in the game.

The Pirates attempted a late comeback and battled back within 13 points, but late baskets by McLaughlin and Addie Meyer kept the game out of reach for SWU as the Tigers cruised to the 58-45 win.

CC improved to 11-1 on the season and will play next Sunday, Jan. 12, against Texas Lutheran in Seguin, Texas, at 11 am MT.
