Philio's Career-High Elevates CC Over McMurry

On Sunday afternoon, senior Devin Philio scored a career-high 24 points and led the Colorado College men's basketball team to a 92-75 victory over McMurry University at Reid Arena.

Philio finished the game with 24 points, shooting 81.8 percent from the floor, six rebounds, six assists, a block, and a career-high four steals. Senior Asher Nofziger followed with 21 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double. He finished with two assists, two blocks and one steal.

CC outrebounded McMurry 39-32 and converted 23 of 29 attempts from the free-throw line. Defensively, the Tiger nabbed a season-high 13 steals and forced 17 turnovers.

"I really challenged our guys yesterday," head coach Jeff Conarroe said. "I didn't feel like we were playing true to the standards we built in this program. I was pleased with our response."

The Tigers exploded offensively out of the gates, drilling seven three-pointers in the first half for 53.8 percent. Seniors Scott Ruegg and Edgar Romero combined for five threes, each with 11 points, to lead CC in the first.

Ruegg made his first three 43 seconds into the game after McMurry took a 3-0 lead. The Tigers responded with a 14-2 over three minutes run to take a 14-5 lead with 16:24 remaining. Ruegg and Devin Philio led the charge with six points each.

After the War Hawks drilled a three to end the run, Ruegg hit his third shot from long range to bring the lead back to nine points.

McMurry battled and brought the game within three points with just over 12 minutes until the half, but another Tiger run highlighted by a Philio dunk ballooned the CC lead to 29-20 with 8:46 left.

Nofziger drilled a jumper to give CC a then-game-high 11-point lead. McMurry countered with a step-back three-pointer, but Ty Hendler sank his own to make it 34-23 with 7:20 left.

CC built up their lead to 16 before the break and entered the locker room with a 48-34 mid-game advantage.

The Tigers attempted to keep the gas on the pedal to start the second half. After the War Hawks scored the first 31 seconds, Nofizger converted on a layup, holding the lead at 14.

McMurry went on their biggest run on the day, outsourcing the Tigers 19-10 over six minutes of play to cut the lead down to five (60-55) with 12:26 left.

The War Hawks came within a point with 10:00 to play, but the Tigers responded with an 18-6 run over the next five minutes. They held McMurry to 30 percent shooting, and Nofziger scored nine points during that span.

Now leading 82-67 with 4:49 remaining, the Tigers maintained a double-digit lead over the final few minutes and cruised to secure their fifth win at home.

"Our energy and effort on the defensive end of the floor," Conarroe said. "I thought we really competed and fought for all the little winning things today. We also had some great output on the offensive end of the floor, but today belongs to the team effort and the guys. They did a great job; we got better from Friday; we need to keep doing it."

Ruegg finished with 17 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals. Hendler dished 13 points, six boards and a career-high eight assists.

CC will host Centenary and the University of the Ozarks next week, starting with the Gents on Friday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. MT.
