Tigers Down Celts, Improve to 10-1

The Colorado College women's basketball team downed St. Thomas 54-40 at Reid Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers move to 10-1 and 2-0 within Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, both wins coming against the Celts.

"This was a gritty team win for us, and we had so many great contributions – Laura's assists, Kyle's steals, Zoë's rebounds and Isa's long-range shots," head coach Katherine Auguste said.

Sophomore Isa Nelson and Senior Zoë Tomlinson combined for 30 points, each with 15. Nelson made a career-high five three-pointers, shooting 83.3 percent from long range.

All of Nelson's points came from beyond the arc while Tomlinson dominated the paint, collecting another double-double with 13 rebounds. She finished the game with three assists, two blocks and three steals.

Senior Kyle Rowland structured chaos all over the defensive end of the court, racking up a career-high five steals.

Both teams struggled to shoot the basketball, the Tigers made only 31.9 percent of their shots from the floor but held the Celts to a 34.0 shooting percentage.

CC made 37.5 percent of their long-range shots and held UST to only 20 percent.

The Tigers led 13-10 after the end of the first as Nelson hit her first two three-pointers. Junior Kayla Mackel followed suit with four points and finished the game with three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Defensively, the second quarter was the Tigers' best span, limiting the Celts to only eight points and a 33.33 shooting clip.

UST took a 16-13 lead after capitalizing off a few CC turnovers. Both teams exchanged scores but Kyle Rowland knotted the game at 18-18 with a crucial three-pointer with 6:06 remaining in the half.

Two minutes later, Tomlinson scored inside the paint to give the Tigers a 20-18 lead. Nelson and Healy Bledsoe's back-to-back three-pointers extended the lead to a game-high eight points with 2:49 remaining.

CC went into the half leading 27-18.

In the third, St. Thomas outscored the Tigers 11-8, reducing the lead to six heading into the final quarter.

Tomlinson had her best quarter to close the game, leading the Tigers with nine points and going 7-8 from the free throw line.

CC scored a game-high 19 points in the fourth and managed to run down the clock to seal its tenth win.

"We are sharpening defensively, and this was one of our better efforts, defending the perimeter against a team that loves to shoot it. I'm proud of our team's combined effort tonight and we are all eager to move forward in conference play next weekend," Auguste said.

The Tigers will head on their first real SCAC road trip of the season next weekend, first against the Pirates at Georgetown on Friday, Jan. 10 and then at Texas Lutheran against the Bulldogs on Sunday, Jan. 12
