CC Upsets No. 18 Calvin On The Road

Colorado College upset No. 18 Calvin University 64-61 on Saturday, Nov. 15th, in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Junior guard JuJu Garcia led the team with a career-high 15 points, one rebound, one assist, one block and two steals. Senior Andie Will followed with 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

It was the first win over a ranked opponent since Feb. 5, 2023, when CC took down then No. 1 Trinity University.

The difference was the seven CC three-pointers compared to Calvin's two. The Tigers held the Knights to only 14.3 percent from long range and 39.1 percent from the floor. CC shot 38.1 percent from the floor, but shot 41.5 percent in the first half.

Garcia led all scorers with eight points in the first quarter as the Tigers outscored the Knights 18-15 thanks to four three-pointers made from Will, Garcia, and junior Isa Nelson. Garcia went 2-2 from long range in the opening quarter.

In the second, the teams traded leads until senior Avery Johnson converted on a layup with 31-30 remaining, followed by a Nelson three-pointer and free throw to make it 35-30.

CC led 35-31 at the break and kept the lead until 2:24 remaining in the third quarter when Calvin regained a 50-48 advantage. A Nayia Kurnik and a pair of Nelson free throws put CC back in front 52-50 with 1:44 remaining.

Will made a final lay, and the Tigers led 54-50 heading into the fourth quarter.

CC built the lead up to as many as six points with nine minutes remaining in the game; however, Calvin made a run to tie the game up at 58-58 with 6:42 remaining.

Will drilled a critical three-pointer on the ensuing possession to regain the lead and Rayna Welsch extended the lead back to five points with a lay-up with 5:28 remaining.

The Knights battled back within two points with 1:21 left in regulation, but the Tigers forced a key turnover to get the ball back with under a minute remaining. Kurnik made a free throw with 24 seconds remaining to make it 64-61.

Calvin had two more chances to tie the game. Garcia blocked its first three-pointer with two seconds remaining. With less than a second left on the clock, the Knights had one final shot left but missed the game-tying three-pointer as time expired.

"Our team was determined to create good outcomes in tonight's game and every individual on our roster battled for this result start-to-finish," head coach Katherine Auguste. "Andie's decision-making, Naiya's rebounds, Avery's defense and Juju's three pointers absolutely stood out as points of pride. We have a season of learning and coming together ahead, and this was an early exclamation mark that we all feel great about. Calvin is a strong team, and this was a highly competitive contest - a fun one, too!"

The Tigers will close out the road trip on Monday, Nov. 17th, at Aurora University at 2 p.m. MT.
