The Colorado College women's basketball team erased a 16-point second-half deficit to down Aurora University 62-59 in Aurora, Ill.
CC was led by senior
Kayla Mackel's season-high 24 points, six rebounds, one assist, two blocks, and three steals.
Freshman
Rayna Welsch racked up her first career double-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds and a block. Junior
JuJu Garcia also scored in double-digits, finishing with 13 points, two boards and two assists.
CC trailed 53-37 with 4:33 remaining in the third quarter. The Tigers went on to outscore the Spartans 25-6 for the rest of the game. They held the Spartans scoreless in the final five minutes of the game.
The Tigers overcame turnovers and being outshot 24-18 with steadfast second-half defense and three-point shooting. They made 36 percent (9-25) shots from long range, led by Mackel's four three-pointers. The Houston native shot 57 percent from deep.
Aurora jumped out to a 21-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and held CC to only 38.46 percent from the floor. The Tigers responded by outscoring the Spartans 18-15 in the second quarter.
Mackel led the team with six points and shot a perfect 3-3 in the second as CC trailed 36-32 at the break.
Aurora went on a significant run to start the third quarter, building up a lead as many at 16 points with 4:33 remaining. CC took a time out with 3:35 left to play in the quarter and from that point on, dominated the remainder of the game. The Tigers ended the quarter on a 9-0 run and trailed 53-46 entering the fourth.
Consecutive three-pointers by Mackel and Kurnik cut the lead to 57-52 with 7:28 in regulation. Less than a minute later, Welsch got to the line and made two free throws to make it 57-54.
Both teams traded baskets until Mackel and Garcia drilled back-to-back three-pointers with a minute to play to give CC its first lead since the opening bucket. Garcia iced the game with two free throws, and the Spartans were unable to make the game-tying three-pointer with seconds left as CC sealed the 62-59 victory.
The Tigers improve to 2-1 with the win and will be on the road again this weekend in Forest Grove, Ore., to take on Puget Sound on Friday, Nov. 21, before battling Pacific on Nov. 22.
