The Colorado College men's basketball team fell in a close 57-55 contest against Mary Baldwin University on Sunday in Hampden-Sydney, VA.
CC (2-3) outscored MBU 37-34 in the second half and held the Fighting Squirrels to only 34.0 percent shooting. However, the Tigers struggled from long range (1-16) and couldn't overcome a slower first half.
Freshman
Nick Brashear scored a career-high 15 points and shot 66.7 percent from the floor (6-9). The Texas native finished with two rebounds and a steal in his 33 minutes on the floor.
Other first-year
Kyle Kihlberg followed with 12 points, a team high seven boards and two steals. Senior
Asher Nofziger also grabbed seven rebounds and scored eight points. Nofziger was named to the Charlie Cobb Classic All-Classic Team. He finished the weekend averaging 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
Senior
Orion Samikoglu finished with 10 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal. He shot 50 percent (5-10) from the floor.
CC trailed 23-18 at the halftime break after shooting only 30.43 percent from the floor. MBU was held to only 19.23 percent but made 12 free throws to manage a first-half lead.
Kihlberg took over in the second half, scoring all 12 of his points behind a perfect 4-4 shooting. CC trailed by as many as 11 points (42-31) with 12:16 remaining. The Tigers went on a run and were able to cut the lead to 47-45 after a pair of Kihlberg jump shots inside the paint.
MBU then rebuilt the lead back up to eight points with 3:55 remaining. CC worked again to cut it down to a single point (56-55) after Samikoglu made a pair of layups in the final two minutes, paired with a
Christian Drummond free throw.
CC was forced to foul with under 14 seconds remaining and MBU made one free throw and forced a turnover on the last possession to seal the 57-55 victory.
The Tigers are back in action in an exhibition game against the Colorado School of Mines on Tuesday, Nov. 25, inside Reid Arena at 6 p.m.
