CC Falls Just Short To CSB In CC Fall Classic Opener

Freshman Rayna Welsch logged a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, but the Colorado College Tigers fell to the College of St. Benedict 51-48.

It was the first loss at Reid Arena since Dec. 15, 2023. Welsch logged her second career double-double and grabbed six offensive boards. The Tigers fought back from an 11-point deficit and nearly forced overtime with a three-pointer at the buzzer by junior Isa Nelson, but it rimmed out.

CC (3-3) outrebounded CSB 50-33 and had 11 offensive boards. Senior Andie Will followed Welsch with seven rebounds and finished with eight points. Junior Naiya Kurnik also had seven boards.

Nelson finished with 11 points, five rebounds and an assist. She shot 50 percent (3-6) from long range.

The Tigers held the Bennies to only 27.1 percent from the floor and 28 percent from long range. CC shot 30.2 percent from the floor but only 23.8 percent from three-point range, which was one of the difference-makers.

CC trailed 23-19 at the half, led by Welsch's six points. The Bennies had a better third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 15-11 and took a 38-30 lead into the final quarter.

In the fourth, the Tigers outscored the Bennies 18-13 and erased the deficit to tie the game at 42-42 with 3:36 remaining in regulation.

Megan Morgan and CSB regained the lead with 3:15 on the clock after a bucket inside the paint. After an FT by the Bennies, Welsch cut the lead back down to one with a jumper with 56 seconds remaining.

CSB leading score, Drew Buslee responded with her own field goal on the ensuing possession, which forced the Tigers to start fouling.

After the teams exchanged possessions in the final seconds, the Tigers grabbed an offensive rebound from a missed free throw and Nelson had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but it hit the far rim.

CSB held onto the 51-48 lead and improved to 6-1 on the season. The Tigers are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Whitman College.
