Tigers Set To Tip Off SCAC Play Against St. Thomas

The Colorado College women's basketball team tips off Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday when it hosts the University of St. Thomas (TX) at Reid Arena. The game is set for 2 p.m.

Last Time Out

CC (4-3) returns to action after taking last weekend off. Last time out, the Tigers hosted Whitman and the College of St. Benedict for the CC Fall Classic. They finished the weekend 1-1 after a loss to the Bennies, but then a bounce-back victory over Whitman.

Against the Blues, the Tigers shot 52.3 percent from the floor, including 41.7 percent from long range, in the third and fourth quarters after a slow start.

CC shot 2-15 from deep in the opening half, but rallied to outscore the Blues 33-19 in the second half. Freshman Rayna Welsch led the team with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and a career high three steals.

Junior JuJu Garcia scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half. She made three of five three-pointers to lead the Tigers' scoring efforts.

Leading The Way

Senior Kayla Mackel leads the team with 14.0 points per game. The Houston native has played in only three games this year but is third on the team in three-pointers made and is also grabbing 5.7 boards per game.

Welsch is second with 12.1 ppg. The Eau Claire, Wis. native leads the team with 6.6 rebounds per game. She has two double-doubles this season, including a 17-point and 11-rebound performance against St. Benedict.

Scouting The Celts

St. Thomas is receiving votes in the D3Hoops.com national poll after winning four of its first five gams. The Celts (4-1) lost their opening game to Texas A&M International but have racked up four-straight wins, including a 69-55 victory over East Texas Baptist and, most recently, a 71-55 win over Huston Tillotson on Dec. 10.
