Career highs from sophomores
Charlotte Iler and
Oliv Janerico propelled the No. 19 Colorado College women's lacrosse team over the Catholic University of America 14-13.
Iler outdid her career-high in points in a game by dishing out nine (5g,4a) while Janerico scored a career-high three goals. CC had six players with multi-point games, including
Tobin Lonergan (1g,2a),
Sofia Mancino (2g,1a),
Grace Bean (1g,1a) and
Meilani Molina (2g).
Despite being outshot 36-21, the efficiency of CC's shot-taking was phenomenal. The Tigers had 19 shots on target for a shot-on-goal-percentage of 90.4 percent.
CC trailed 4-0 after the first eight minutes after the Cardinals came out hot and scored four times for their most significant lead of the day. The Tigers quickly responded with four straight of their own, including three from Iler. Catholic scored on a free position play with one second left in the quarter to take a 5-4 lead into the second.
The Cardinals scored three times to the Tigers' one lone goal in the first half of the second.
Grace Bean scored her fifth goal of the season with 11:07 remaining to cut the lead down to one goal, but Catholic responded with consecutive goals to go up 10-7 with 7:10 remaining.
CC trailed 10-9 heading into the fourth but took its first lead after Mancino scored consecutive goals less than 20 seconds from each other, pushing the Tigers in front 11-10 with 13:45 remaining in the game.
After a Cardinal goal shortly after, Janerico scored her third goal on a woman-up opportunity, followed by Iler's fourth goal to give CC its largest lead of the day at 13-11.
Catholic managed to find the back of the net with 6:03 remaining to try to cap the CC lead at one goal, but Iler struck gold for the fifth time on an unassisted score with 4:26 left on the clock, which ended up being the game-winner.
The Cardinals tried to come back with one more goal with three minutes on the clock, but the Tigers defense forced late turnovers and ran out the clock to seal the eventual 14-13 victory.
CC will hit the road starting Friday in Memphis, Tenn. at Rhodes College before battling DePauw University on Sunday in a neutral site game.
