No. 19 Colorado College upset No. 9 Pomona Pitzer 13-8 on Thursday to hand the Sagehens (9-1) their first loss of the season. Senior
Peyton Murphy led the Tigers (6-2) with four goals and
Tobin Lonergan dished a career-high five assists and scored a goal.
CC had a 70.3 shot-on-goal percentage, and four players scored multiple goals. Sophomores
Sofia Mancino,
Charlotte Iler and
Oliv Janerico combined for seven goals.
"I am very proud of our response to our loss Monday," head coach
Susan Stuart said. "We discussed our need to play more focused in games, and the team responded with very disciplined play all over the field. It was our most complete game to date where we reigned in our inconsistencies and responded to all the distractions in a positive manner."
It's the first win over Pomona Pitzer since 2022 and ends a five-game losing streak against the Sagehens.
The Tigers never trailed and led by as many as eight goals. Defensively, CC held Pomona Pitzer to its lowest-scoring game of the season. Junior goalkeeper
Cassidy Schnaufer made 12 saves and
Peyton Murphy and junior
Amanda Roan each had two caused turnovers.
Murphy scored her first only a minute and 12 seconds into the game. The Austin, Texas native is second on the team with 17 goals and is on a four-game scoring streak.
Mancino made it 2-1 after the Sagehens responded to Murphy's first goal. Murphy then scored back-to-back goals to make it 4-1 CC at the end of the first.
CC's defense held the Sagehens to only eight shots on goal in the first half and only two goals. Scores by Lonergan, Murphy and Bean made it 7-2 Tigers at the break.
In the third, Iler scored on an unassisted effort to give CC a six-goal lead. The Sagehens countered with consecutive scores to cut the lead down to four. However, CC responded with its own pair of goals to end the quarter and led 10-4 heading into the final quarter.
The Sagehens attempted to come back in the final 15 minutes, outsourcing the Tigers 4-1, but the lead was too much to overcome, as the Tigers cruised to the 13-8 victory.
"I am very proud of the team performance and the energy everyone came with today," Stuart said. "We need to use this momentum going forward for the second half of our season."
CC improved to 3-1 at home and hosts Chapman University next Thursday, March 27, at 4 pm at Washburn Field.
