No. 17 Tigers Upset No. 11 TCNJ

On Saturday afternoon, No. 17 Colorado College gained another signature win by downing No. 11 The College of New Jersey by a final score of 17-13. It's the second win this year for CC over a ranked team and its first ever win over TCNJ.

"Today's game was a total team effort," head coach Susan Stuart said. "We needed to rebound mentally from our loss at Trinity. I think that loss brought some doubt to us, but the day off brought us back to the reason we are all here. There is nothing like the relationships developed on a team that really loves, cares and supports each other. It is a special moment in every athletes lives that can't be replicated."

Five points from sophomores Charlotte Iler and Sofia Mancino and a hat trick from junior Grace Bean elevated the Tigers for their 16th win of the season. They end the regular season with a 16-3 record, the best since 2019.

CC outshot TCNJ 39-37, including 27-24 shots-on-goal. The Tigers never trailed against the Lions after taking a lead with 13:36 remaining in the opening quarter. Healy Bledsoe scored the first goal before TCNJ responded with its first about 20 seconds later.

Both teams traded goals back for most of the first quarter before Tobin Lonergan scored consecutive goals to put CC in front 5-3 with 2:58 remaining. TCNJ scored once more before the end of the first as the Tigers led by one at the start of the second.

The back-and-forth scoring continued for the second quarter, but the Tigers went on their biggest run of the day, scoring three goals unanswered to make it 10-7. CC rode that momentum into the halftime break.

In the third, TCNJ returned within one goal, but two goals from Grace Bean gave CC another three-goal lead entering the fourth quarter.

Bean completed the hat trick with an unassisted goal with 13:35 left in the game after the Lions  scored first in the final frame. Ally Tobler from TCNJ brought TCNJ back within a goal after back-to-back scores with 11:47 remaining. Mancino and Meilani Molina countered with their own goals, and CC led 15-12 with 6:24 left.

The Lions scored their final goal with five minutes left as the Tigers' defense came in clutch in crunch time. Oliv Janerico and Mancino shut the door with two final goals as CC won 17-13.

"The College of New Jersey has always been a marker for us," Stuey said.  "They are a storied program with so much success.  We have used them in many ways as a model of the way we want to run our program and how we want to find success, so the blueprint helped us find that success. We had a huge number of alums and parents cheering us on in the stands and the energy from the sidelines and on the field was nothing but supportive and positive which will always lend itself to success. Happily, today that success included the win."

The Tigers will have next weekend off before going for a second-straight WIAC Tournament crown in two weeks, starting Friday, May 2.
