Mackel Leads CC Past Hendrix For Fifth-Straight Win

Colorado College pulled out a gritty 61–58 road win over Hendrix on Friday night at Grove Gymnasium, using a late fourth-quarter push and timely stops in the final minutes to remain unbeaten in SCAC play and improve its win streak to five-straight.

CC shot 36.2 percent from the field and held Hendrix to 39.6 percent, while forcing 27 turnovers and turning them into a 27–17 advantage in points off miscues. The Tigers also held edges in fast-break points (7–3) and points in the paint (22–20) in a game that featured eight lead changes and five ties.

Senior Kayla Mackel led CC with 21 points, hitting four three-pointers and adding three steals. Senior Andie Will followed with 12 points and a game-high six assists, while Freshman Rayna Welsch added 11 points and five rebounds and Junior Naiya Kurnik finished with nine points and nine boards.

After trailing 33–27 at halftime, CC outscored Hendrix 17–10 in the third quarter to take a 44–43 lead into the final period, setting the stage for a back-and-forth fourth quarter.

The Tigers broke the final tie at 45 when Mackel buried a go-ahead three with 8:53 remaining, sparking a decisive run. Welsch followed with a driving layup, and Will knocked down a pull-up three to stretch the margin to 54–46. Will then converted a pair of free throws, and Mackel added two more at the line to push the lead to double figures at 58–48 with 5:36 to play.

Hendrix closed within two in the final two minutes, but CC answered with defensive stops and sealed the win at the stripe when Isa Nelson hit a free throw with 14 seconds remaining before the Tigers forced a turnover on the ensuing possession to secure the 61–58 victory.

Hendrix was led by Riley Brady with 19 points and 17 rebounds.

CC finished with 13 assists and 16 steals in a composed closing performance that secured the Tigers' fifth straight conference win. The Tigers head to Clarksville, AR to take on the University of the Ozarks on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 1 pm MT.
