Colorado College used a dominant first half and a closing surge in the fourth quarter to secure an 85–63 win over McMurry on Friday night at Reid Arena, extending its winning streak to seven games and remaining unbeaten in SCAC play at 7–0.
The victory was a key divisional result and kept CC in a tie for first place in the conference, as the Tigers improved to 12–4 overall with the wire-to-wire performance.
Senior Kayla Mackel delivered a career night, scoring a career-high 30 points on 12-of-22 shooting, including five three-pointers, while adding seven assists and three rebounds. She scored in all four quarters and set the tone early as CC raced out to a 24–15 lead after one.
The Tigers continued to build separation in the second quarter, shooting over 70 percent from the field in the period and taking a 49–41 advantage into halftime. Freshman Rayna Welsch and Andie Will controlled the tempo, combining for 24 first-half points and seven assists as CC repeatedly attacked the paint and the perimeter.
McMurry made its push in the third, trimming the margin to five late in the quarter after a series of second-chance buckets and transition looks. Each time, however, the Tigers answered. Mackel knocked down a three to push the lead back to eight, and Welsch followed with a finish in the lane that made it 61–54, steadying the momentum before CC entered the fourth up 63–58.
CC then closed the game with authority. A 22–5 fourth-quarter run blew the contest open, highlighted by back-to-back threes from Mackel and a fast-break layup by Isa Nelson, pushing the lead to as many as 22 in the final two minutes.
Welsch finished with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists, while senior Andie Will added 10 points and six assists. Junior ISa Nelson chipped in 11 points, and freshman Iliana Greene provided a spark off the bench with nine points, including a pair of triples. CC shot 56.7 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from three, while holding McMurry to just 15.4 percent shooting in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers also owned the interior, outscoring the War Hawks 48–34 in the paint, and finished with advantages in fast-break points (8–5) and bench scoring (15–11), forcing 13 turnovers and turning them into timely offense.
With the win, CC improved to 12–4 overall and 7–0 in SCAC play, extending its winning streak to seven and continuing its run atop the conference standings.
