Mackel Delivers Another 30-Piece To Lead Tigers Over Tornadoes

Senior Kayla Mackel tied her career high with 30 points to lead Colorado College to a 79-72 victory over Concordia (TX) on Friday evening in Austin, Texas.

Mackel finished 10-for-19 from the field and 9-for-10 at the free-throw line while adding eight rebounds and three assists. It marked her first 30-point performance of the season. She is now 90 points shy of reaching 1,000 career points.

CC (14-4, 9-0) never trailed and led for 37:54 but had to withstand a third-quarter surge before closing it out in the fourth. The win extended the Tigers' streak to nine straight.

The Tigers led 19-16 after the first quarter and stretched the margin to 43-36 at halftime. Concordia outscored the Tigers 22-17 in the third to cut the deficit to 60-58 entering the final period. CC responded with a 19-14 fourth quarter to secure the win.

Senior Andie Will added 15 points and three steals, while freshman Rayna Welsch finished with 10 points and four assists. Junior Naiya Kurnik pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to help CC to a 45-39 advantage on the glass.

The Tigers shot 41 percent from the field and went 25-for-26 at the free-throw line, good for 96.2 percent. CC held a 21-9 edge in fast-break points and outscored Concordia 15-4 in points off turnovers. Concordia never led in the contest.

Shanna Brown paced Concordia with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
 
CC will play their second game in two days when it travels to Seguin, Texas tomorrow to take on Texas Lutheran at 5 p.m. MT. Both the Tigers and Bulldogs are the only teams in the SCAC with unbeaten conference records, which will come to an end on Saturday.
