Tigers Win Third Straight Game, Downing 'Roos at Reid

Colorado College sealed its third-straight victory after a strong 58–47 win over Austin College on Friday night at Reid Arena.

The Tigers (8-4, 3-0 SCAC) held the Kangaroos to 29.8 percent shooting from the field and just 11.1 percent from three-point range (2-of-18), while finishing with a 41–41 tie on the glass and forcing 17 turnovers. CC went 24-of-30 at the free-throw line (80.0 percent) and outscored Austin 18–11 in the fourth quarter to pull away late.

Freshman Rayna Welsch led the Tigers with 14 points and six rebounds, while senior Kayla Mackel added 12 points and seven boards and freshman Iliana Greene chipped in 13 points.

The opening quarter featured a defensive tone, with both teams combining to shoot under 30 percent. CC took its first lead on an Andie Will fast-break layup, then closed the period on a pair of free throws from Greene in the final seconds to hold a 12–10 advantage.

The Tigers created separation in the second quarter, using a 14–9 frame to push the margin to 26–19 at the half. Mackel sparked a key stretch with back-to-back three-pointers at the 3:09 and 2:42 marks, and Garcia followed with a step-back triple at 1:22 to give CC its largest lead of the half at nine points.

Austin responded out of the break with a strong third quarter, trimming the deficit to 40–36 behind interior scoring and second-chance opportunities. The Kangaroos opened the period on a 6–2 run and stayed within two possessions for much of the frame, but CC weathered the surge with timely free throws from Welsch and a pair of baskets from Greene to maintain a four-point cushion entering the final period.

The Tigers took control in the fourth quarter, opening on an 8–2 run to extend the lead to double figures. Welsch converted a pair of free throws, Mackel finished a drive through traffic, and Garcia added a transition layup to make it 48–38 with 5:41 remaining. CC continued to apply pressure defensively, forcing four turnovers in the quarter, and sealed the win at the line, going 10-of-12 from the stripe in the final 10 minutes.

CC finished with 21 bench points, eight fast-break points, and a 38:10 edge in time with the lead. The Tigers also outscored Austin 24–14 in points off turnovers and limited the Kangaroos to 10 points in the paint during the first half, setting the tone for a wire-to-wire conference victory.

The Tigers will wrap up the weekend against the University of Dallas on Sunday, Jan. 9 at 3 p.m. MT.
