Tigers Clinch Gold Division Title, Mackel Reaches 1,000 Career Points

Colorado College clinched the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Gold Division title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament with a dominant 91–49 victory over Centenary (LA) on Friday evening at Reid Arena.

With the win, CC improved to 19-5 overall and 14-1 in SCAC play, securing first place in the division with one game remaining in the regular season.

Senior Kayla Mackel led the Tigers with 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting, including four three-pointers. Mackel also reached a historic milestone, becoming the 17th player in program history to score 1,000 career points.

The Tigers overcame a slow shooting start to seize control late in the first quarter. After trailing briefly early, CC closed the period on a decisive run to take a 20-15 lead, then extended the margin to 36-24 at halftime behind defensive pressure and free-throw efficiency.

CC broke the game open in the second half. The Tigers outscored Centenary 27-13 in the third quarter and 28-12 in the fourth, finishing with their largest lead of 42 points while leading for more than 35 minutes of game time.

Freshman Rayna Welsch added 16 points and seven rebounds while going 14-of-18 from the free-throw line. Junior Naiya Kurnik dominated the glass with a season-high 16 rebounds to go with six points. Junior Iliana Greene contributed seven points, six rebounds, three assists, and a career-high five steals, while sophomore Payton Gates scored 10 points off the bench.

CC controlled the interior throughout the contest, outrebounding Centenary 50-26 and holding a 32-12 advantage in points in the paint. The Tigers also forced 24 turnovers, converting them into 32 points, while their bench provided a significant spark with a 45-7 scoring edge.

Centenary shot just 33 percent from the field and was led by Alexis Duhon with 13 points.

Colorado College closes the regular season on Sunday as it hosts LeTourneau for Senior Day.
