The Colorado College women's tennis team extended its winning streak to five Monday afternoon with a 5-2 upset victory over 22
nd-ranked Wellesley College in San Antonio, Texas.
The Tigers, ranked 36
th in the latest ITA Division III poll, won the No. 3 doubles match, but lost the other two as Wellesley jumped out to a 1-0 lead. After
Aspen Young and
Lucia Moravek lost the No. 1 match, 6-2, to Emilee Pak and Suzanne Xu,
Lindsay Popeo and
Avery Hickman defeated Sophie Buttorff and Nandini Patel, 7-5, at the No. 3 spot. The point came down to the No. 2 match, where
Kala Komanduri and
Ally Lowe fell, 7-5, to Luna Bian and Kriti Sarav.
CC roared back to win five of the six singles matches, including two of them in three sets. Komanduri evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Patel at the No. 3 spot, but Bian put Wellesley up 2-1 by defeating Hickman, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4.
The Tigers took over from that point, with Moravek rallying to beat Buttorff, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Young defeating Xu, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 for a 3-2 lead. Popeo clinched the match with a thrilling, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, victory over Sarav at No. 6 and Lowe wrapped things up by downing Sofia Corte-Real, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2.
"All those late night and long practices paid off today," head coach
Anthony Weber said. "Our team was prepared and ready to fight throughout the lineup. They gave us a chance at every singles spot and converted five of them. Shout out to the men's team for cheering for us, and to Lindsay, a native Bostonian, for delivering the knockout punch."
The Tigers (7-2, 4-0 SCAC) return to action on Tuesday, March 17, against 12
th-ranked Trinity University in San Antonio, beginning at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
