Colorado College senior
Rabbit Barnes was named the Division III West Region Male Athlete of the Year for indoor track by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Â
Barnes finished runner-up in the mile at the NCAA DIII Indoor Championships, which was the best result by any athlete from the West Region. He finished the race with a time of 4:14.39, just behind Jack Brown of Central College, whose winning time was 4:14.01.
Â
Earlier in the season, Barnes clocked a school-record time of 4:04.95 at the Husky Classic and set a 3000-meter PR of 8:47.85 in January.
Â
Barnes' runner-up finish at the national meet ties the second-best in the history of Colorado College for a male athlete in an individual sport. Jordan DeGayner won the 200 freestyle race at the 2012 NCAA Division III Swimming Championships, while Julian Boggs finished second in the 5K at the 2006 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
