Big Third Quarter Fuels Tigers Past Elmhurst

The Colorado College men's lacrosse team rallied from an early deficit and used an 8-1 advantage in the third quarter to defeat Elmhurst University, 18-10, Thursday evening in Elmhurst, Ill.

The Tigers, 10-2 and No. 27 in the latest NPI rankings, trailed 5-1 at the end of the first quarter, but rallied with goals by Matt Hudson, Luke Smith and Wyatt Furda in the second quarter to cut the Elmhurst lead to 5-4 at halftime.

Colorado College dominated the third quarter, scoring eight of the nine goals in the frame. Hudson initiated the scoring just seconds into the quarter with a man-up goal, then Gavin Pope gave CC the lead with a goal at 12:47, and they never relinquished it.

Aiden Niklaus found the net twice in the quarter, with his first goal coming at the 10:00 mark, and his second with one minute remaining, the last of CC's 11 straight goals. Elmhurst's Hunter Hernandez scored with 37 seconds left in the quarter. And CC held a 12-6 lead heading to the final quarter.

Hudson added two of his game-high four goals in the fourth quarter, while goalie Robert Spence wrapped up the scoring with a last-second goal.

Niklaus led all players with seven points (3g,4a), while Liam Goodwin had three goals and Pope and Furda each scored twice. Spence made seven saves, as did Elmhurst goalie Andrew Lacksonen. The Tigers outshot Elmhurst, 46-41, including a 25-17 advantage in shots on goal.

"A comeback like this shows the growth of our program and the strength of our leadership," head coach Mike Horowitx said. "Our depth is what made the comeback possible. It takes a lot of energy to make that happen, but when you spread it across the whole roster, you can always believe."

Colorado College returns to action at Adrian College on Saturday, April 18, beginning at noon (ET).
