Oliv Janerico scored with one second remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime and
Charlotte Iler scored a free-position goal 1:39 into the extra frame to give the Colorado College women's lacrosse team a come-from-behind 13-12 victory over UW-River Falls Sunday afternoon at Ramer Field in River Falls, Wis.
Â
With the Tigers trailing 12-11, Eleanor Thompson-Witt of River Falls was assessed a two-minute yellow card with 21 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. CC's
Elsa Greene had her free-position shot blocked and after a scramble for the ball, Iler sent a centering pass from the right wing to Janerico, who beat the Falcons' goalie Annelise Rommeck from right in front at the buzzer. Janerico scored with 17 seconds left in regulation on Thursday to force overtime in a 15-14 victory over the University of Chicago.
Â
The Falcons gained the draw control to begin overtime, but
Sofia Mancino forced a turnover, and after River Falls' Julia Hayek was given a yellow card, Iler buried the free-position shot to give Colorado College a 7-0 record in WIAC play and at least a share of the conference's regular-season title.
Â
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Mancino, Greene and Iler and held that advantage after the first period. River Falls rallied to outscore CC, 7-1, in the second period to take a 7-4 halftime lead, but CC responded with five goals in the third period and the score was even at 9-all entering the fourth quarter.
Â
The Falcons' Murphi Specht scored three minutes into the final frame for a 10-9 lead, but Iler and
Grace Bean scored within two minutes of each other to give CC an 11-10 advantage with eight minutes remaining. Samantha Hayek scored for River Falls with 6:31 and 3:31 remaining for a 12-11 River Falls lead, setting up Janerico's last-second heroics.
Â
Iler led all players with four goals and seven points, while Bean added three goals and Greene and
Maddie Jenks each had two. Hayek and Elizabeth Clough each had a team-high three goals for River Falls. Iler is now No. 4 on CC's career list with 163 goals and No. 6 with 223 points.
Â
Cassidy Schnaufer made five saves for the Tigers, while Rommeck had six for River Falls. CC held a 31-26 advantage in total shots and 15-12 in shots on goal.
Â
"I am very happy we were able to grit it out in the final minutes, River Falls played a great game and we had luck on our side when Oliv scored at the buzzer," head coach AJ Johnson said. "this was a long four-day road trip and two big overtime wins shows me that this team is relentless and still hungry for more."
