One too many penalties, too little offense.
It's an ugly combination that caught up with No. 3-ranked Colorado College on Friday.
Freshman forward Tyler Thompson cashed in on Minnesota State University's ninth power of the night, scoring the game-winning goal with 6:01 left to lift the Mavericks to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over CC in the opener of their two-game series at the Alltel Center in Mankato, Minn.
The Tigers, who remain winless on the road this season, dropped to 6-2-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the WCHA after losing in Mankato for the third consecutive time dating back to February 2007. MSU improved to 5-2-2 overall and 3-2-2 in league play heading into Saturday's rematch.
Fourth-liner Thompson was the recipient of a bit of luck, as his deciding backhand from a scramble in the slot hit the post behind CC goalie
Richard Bachman then trickled into the net off Bachman's skate.
But, as was the case in a 3-1 loss to North Dakota a week earlier, Colorado College just didn't generate many offensive opportunities en route to being out-shot by a 37-26 margin.
While killing Minnesota State's first eight power plays, the Tigers failed on the final six of their own including a back-to-back pair just prior to Thompson's late tally. They seldom tested Mavericks goaltender Mike Zacharias, who was solid but needed to make only a handful of quality saves.
Chad Rau clicked for his sixth goal of the season during CC's first man-advantage situation of the night, lifting a rebound of
Brian Connelly's low blast from the point past Zacharias with the contest just 2:27 old.
Nate Prosser, Connelly's partner at the blue line, also earned an assist on the early red lighter.
The Tigers kept the lead until the 7:56 mark of the second period, when MSU's Mick Berge tied things up. Berge knocked the puck past Bachman from the edge of the goalmouth after Tyler Bruess circled the net and took a shot from the right faceoff circle. Bachman made 18 of his 35 saves in that middle frame.
