In terms of establishing credibility among the nation's elite women's soccer programs this season, undefeated Colorado College took a huge step forward on Saturday.
Kelly LaVoie's dramatic goal in the 103rd minute of play lifted CC to a 2-1 double overtime victory over the University of Denver in opening-round play of the Air Force Academy's Falcon Invitational at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
It was the first meeting between the Central Region rivals since 2001, and one that the Tigers won't soon forget. Both teams entered the match with 4-0-1 records, but it was DU that was ranked as high as No. 4 in the region and No. 30 in the country.
Rallying from behind for the second time in six matches to date, Colorado College tied the contest midway through the second half when
Tiffany Brown pounced on a loose ball in the box and drilled it past Pioneers keeper Mackenzie Snyder from 10 yards out. Snyder made two of her five total saves in the first 10-minute sudden-death period, but there was nothing she could do to stop the golden goal by LaVoie, who faked past a DU defender on the right side and fired just inside the far post from about five yards out to end the game.
"We're very, very pleased with our work rate and effort today," said head coach
Geoff Bennett. "We got down 1-0 early but didn't let that affect us. We just kept fighting back and working hard, and it paid off for us in the end."
CC keeper
Geneva Sills finished with four saves, allowing only a rebound tally by Denver's Taryn Hemmings at the 31:21 mark.
The Tigers attempt to extend their six-game unbeaten streak on Sunday when they take on Army in an 11 a.m. match, also part of the Falcon Invitational at the academy.
