The women's tennis team evened its record at 1-1 with a 7-2 victory over Division II Metropolitan State College on Sunday in Denver.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead when Kelsey Smith and Deanna Thirkell cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Jordan Evans and Britt Swenson fell behind 4-1 at No. 1 doubles before roaring back for an 8-6 triumph.
“I think there was between 4-6 match points before we closed it out,” head coach Perry Wright said. “In many ways, I think that win was the straw that broke the camels back. As we headed into singles, we were very confident and I think our opponents were a bit deflated after the loss.”
CC won five of six singles matches, all in straight sets.
Evans carried the momentum from her doubles win into the No. 1 singles match, dispatching Mitra Hirad by a 6-2, 6-2 count.
At No. 2 singles, Kelsey Smith survived a first-set battle before cruising past Amanda Bowling 6-4, 6-0.
Deanna Thirkell earned her first collegiate singles victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over April Hirad.
“Kelsey had a great match, mixing up her shots and not allowing her hard hitting opponent to get in a rhythm,” Wright said. “Deanna came up with her first career singles win by moving her opponent around in the back court and taking control of points when given the opportunity.”
Britt Swenson earned her second victory of the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Miriam Evangelista at No. 4 singles.
Sally Bryant earned CC's final point at No. 5 singles by claiming a 6-4, 6-0 over Kathleen Thompson.
The Tigers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 27, when they play host to Colorado Christian University.
