For the second match in a row, Colorado College dropped a 5-4 decision to a Division II program. This time it was Mesa State College which edged the Tigers on Friday night in Denver.

The match was decided at No. 3 doubles, where Willia Keller and Kevin Nydam survived several match points and were able to defeat
Thomas Modern and
Sam Barnard 9-7.

“Thomas and Sam had several match points in their doubles match that would have turned the result in our favor,” head coach Naren Clark said. “It was a hard fought match on both sides with Mesa edging us out in just a few key points.”

Trailing 2-1 after doubles play, the Tigers needed to win four of six singles matches to pull out the victory. And despite losing in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3, CC nearly pulled off the improbable upset.

Daniel Solomon held on for a 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 victory over Jordan Chomko at No. 1 singles. Then both
Evan Jonker and
Sam Barnard rallied from one set down to post victories.

Jonker defeated Kevin Nydam 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 at No. 4 singles, while Barnard kept CC in the match with a 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 win against Willie Kellor at No. 6 singles.

The Tigers looked to be in great shape after Modern won the first set at No. 5 singles, but Niko Corrizo rebounded to post a 4-6, 6-0, 10-2 victory which provided the winning margin for the Mavericks.

“Another heartbreaking loss,” Clark said. “It was almost a repeat of the Metro match with four out of six singles going into third sets. Overall I was pleased with how we played, although frustration crept in when we were edged out by only matter of points.”
