For the second year in a row, a slow start cost the Colorado College women's lacrosse team a victory over West Region rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
On Friday night at Claremont, the Tigers dug themselves a 5-0 hole during the first 10 minutes, and despite dominating most final 50, gave up two goals in the final two minutes and dropped a 16-15 decision to the Athenas.
Colorado College took a 15-14 lead with 2:35 remaining in the game, but after winning the ensuing draw control, the Tigers turned the ball over in the offensive zone and CMS tied the score with just 31 seconds remaining in the game.
Courtney Cronin sealed the upset victory with another goal 12 seconds later.
If the Tigers had played the entire game the way they played during the second half, it would have been no contest. CC outscored the Athenas 9-3 to take its first and only lead.
CC helped CMS build an 11-6 lead after 30 minutes by taking four of five yellow cards. The Athenas were called for two.
Grace Maloney led the Tigers with a season-high five goals, while Gioia Garden added four.
Sarah Dick led CMS with four goals and two assists.
Colorado College will play Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Sunday.
