Tigers win sixth consecutive season opener

Colorado College set a school record for goals in a season opener as the Tigers began the 2009 campaign with a 21-8 victory over Misericordia College on Wednesday afternoon at Stewart Field.

Colorado College started its season with a victory for the sixth year in a row and improved to 11-4 all-time in season openers. The previous high of 18 goals scored in the first game of the year happened in 2004 versus the University of Redlands and in 2005 against Kenyon College.

Fourteen different players scored for Colorado College, including six of seven freshmen who accounted 10 goals and two assists.

“Our freshmen didn't play like freshmen in their first game,” head coach Susan Stuart said. “And I was very pleased with our attack.”

Grace Maloney paced the Tigers with three goals, while Bailey Terhune had a game-high four points with two goals and two assists. Leslie Jacoby had a pair of goals, while Rachel Greene, Erica Wineland-Thomson and Kelsey Morell each scored once.

Ali Zarlengo and Maggie Defanti each had two goals and an assist, while Claire Draudt scored twice.

After the Cougars pulled to within 11-7 on a goal by Shannon Tinkham just 25 seconds into the second half, Colorado College reeled off 10 consecutive goals to 20-7 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Despite being short one player for a total of 10:32 in the first half and playing down two for another 1:06 because of penalties, the Tigers were able to build an 11-6 lead after 30 minutes. CC scored three of its first four goals while down one player.

Jamie Wargo led Misericordia with game highs of four goals and five points. Nicole DeAngelis added three scores.

Jess Van Doren made all eight of her saves in the first half before giving way to Valerie Cranmer with 18:04 remaining in the game. Kathryn Wallace stopped six shots for the Cougars.

Colorado College will make the first of two consecutive trips to Southern California this weekend to face Redlands and Whittier College on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
