Jordan Evans and
Britt Swenson combined for three points to help lead the Colorado College women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over Mesa State College on Friday afternoon at the Garden of the Gods Club in Colorado Springs.
Evans and Swenson gave the Tigers an early lead by posting an 8-4 victory over Kate Lowder and Victoria Sargent at No. 1 doubles.
The second point was much more difficult to earn as each of the other two doubles matches were decided by tie breakers.
Sally Bryant and Erin Yamamoto trailed 7-5, but were able to come from behind to post a 9-8 (8-6) victory over Renee Demianew and Mandy Divino at No. 3 doubles, but Kelsey Smith and Deanne Thirkell dropped a 9-8 (7-5) decision to Kaitlan and Kelleen Sera.
“I was very happy to see that the work we have been putting into our doubles games is paying off,” head coach Perry Wright said. “We we're points from going up 3-0 after doubles. Then again, we were also points from being down 2-1.”
Four of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets, with each team getting two points.
Evans picked up her second win of the day be defeating Lowder 6-3, 6.2. Thirkell was even more dominant while breezing to a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Demianew.
The most exciting singles matches were at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, where Smith and Swenson prevailed in three sets.
Smith clinched the team victory with a 6-3, 6-7 (10-12), 6-3 over Sargent.
“Kelsey perhaps had one of the best matches of her career- not because she played particularly amazing, but she played with a great deal of heart and guts,” Wright said. “Losing 10-12 in the tiebreak for the second set to close out the match could really deflate a player, but her determination and team pride really showed through.”
Swenson dropped the first set, but was able to extend her winning streak to 11 matches with a 4-6, 7-5, 5-4 (7-4) over Kaitlan Sera.
“I'm very happy about the way out match went today because it was a close match that we were able to win,” Wright said. “All of the other close matches this season have gone the other way, so it's very nice to see that we can play with a little guts and pull it out.”
Colorado College (7-5) will face the University of Montana-Billings on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Burghardt Tennis Courts.
