BSC wins battle of SCAC division leaders

Jarrell Sweet led all scorers with 17 points, but Colorado College couldn't overcome foul problems and dropped a 70-65 decision to Birmingham-Southern College in a battle of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference division leaders on Friday night at CC's Reid Gymnasium.

The Panthers improved to 13-1 overall and lead the Eastern Division with a 5-1 conference record. The Tigers slipped to 9-5 overall and into a tie with Austin College atop the Western Division standings with a 4-2 mark.

Colorado College led for most of the opening 20 minutes and went ahead 36-28 when Jeremiah Waters drained one of his five three pointers 23 seconds into the second half, but the momentum was lost just over two minutes later when Nick Rose, the SCAC's leading scorer, was sent to the bench for his fourth foul.

The Tigers led 43-38 after Michael Goforth scored on a short jumper with 13:42 to play, but Birmingham-Southern went on a 21-1 run that included 12 consecutive points after Rose fouled out and Sweet picked up his fourth foul within a span of 50 seconds.

The Panthers led by as many as 15 points, but CC clawed its way back to within five points when BSC made just 10 of 16 free throws during the final four minutes. Birmingham-Southern made 16 of 26 free throws for the game, while the Tigers converted on three of their five attempts.

CC finished with a season-high 12 three-point baskets, while the Panthers made just four.

Colorado College's starting five were called for a combined 18 fouls, only four of which were occurred during the final four minutes when the Tigers intentionally sent BSC to the free-throw line.

Waters drained a career-high five 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, while Brady Ohlsen added 14 and team highs of six rebounds and four blocked shots. Rose scored just seven points in 12 minutes.
