Pirates power past Tigers in Las Vegas

Jack Loofburrow scored 31 points to lead undefeated Whitworth University to an 86-59 victory over Colorado College on Saturday night at the 2010 D3Hoops.com Classic at the South Point Hotel and Casino.

While the 6-foot-7 Loofburrow was making 12 of 13 field goal attempts, the Pirates recorded a 41-24 advantage on the glass thanks in part to Mike Taylor, who grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Tigers pulled to within 47-36 when Ben Foley drained one of his four three-point baskets 3:58 into the second half, but Whitworth ran off 18 consecutive points when the CC offense suffered through a scoreless span of 5:14 that didn't end until Jeremiah Waters scored his only points of the game with a long trey with 10:48 remaining in the game.

Foley finished with a season-high 14 points and shared the team lead with Ryan Milne. Ian Rewoldt added 11 points, while Brady Ohlsen pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

Colorado College made four of its first eight long-distance shots to keep pace with the Pirates during the first 10 minutes.

Jake Tramutolo hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Tigers an early 6-2 lead, and after a Whitworth basket, Milne scored five straight points to give CC an 11-4 advantage 3:45 into the game.

Felix Friedt gave the Pirates their first lead at 15-14 on a pair of free throws, but Colin Madden knocked down a three-pointer to give CC its final lead with 10:18 to go. Whitworth answered with a 15-1 run that was finally stopped when Ian Rewoldt sank a pair of free throws with 4:41 remaining in the first half.

After Milne trimmed the Tigers' deficit to 34-24 with 3:03 to go, the Pirates tacked on the final seven points to build a 41-24 lead after 20 minutes.

Whitworth improved to 11-0, while CC slipped to 5-5.

Colorado College returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Friday when the Tigers play host to Trinity University at 6 p.m.
