A six-match road trip in Southern California started off on a positive note as Colorado College posted a 7-2 victory over Caltech on Thursday afternoon in Pasadena.
Nate Burt, Lionel Zen-Ruffinen, Thomas Modern and Zach White each were involved in a pair of victories as the Tigers played at low altitude for the first time this season.
CC grabbed an early 2-1 lead after Burt and Zen-Ruffinen posted an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles and Modern and White prevailed at No. 2 doubles by an 8-4 count.
Evan Jonker won for the third time in four matches with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 2 singles. Thomas Modern (6-1, 6-2) and Zach White (6-2, 6-2) also won in straight sets at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively, to seal the victory for the Tigers.
“Evan had a strong showing at No. 2, never really letting his opponent build any confidence,” head coach Naren Clark said. “Thomas and Zach played steady matches to edge out their opponents with ease.”
Zen-Ruffinen started slowly in the first set, but then breezed through the second to record a 7-6(2), 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, while Burt survived a tie-breaker in the third set to earn a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(5) victory at No. 1 singles.
“It always takes some time to adjust to the first match at low altitude,” Clark said. “While we came away with a 7-2 victory, it was evident that we needed the day to get used to the new playing conditions. Overall it was not our strongest performance, but it was a good opportunity to shake off the nerves and adjust to the altitude.”
CC improved to 3-1, while Caltech slipped to 5-3.
