Evans wins twice, but Tigers fall at CMS

Jordan Evans won both her matches, but Colorado College dropped a 6-3 decision at Claremont Colleges in a contest that came down to the final two singles matches.

“All in all, it was a good match,” head coach Perry Wright said. “I was very pleased with how Jordan played in both of her matches. She was closing the net very hard in doubles and was staying very composed in singles. It was awesome to see this transition.”

Evans and Britt Swenson combined for an 8-5 victory at No. 1 singles that kept the Tigers within striking distance heading into the singles matches.

The Athens prevailed at No. 1 and No. 6 singles to build a 4-1 advantage, but Deanne Thirkell posted a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles and Evens cut the Tigers' deficit to 4-3 with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 3

CMS clinched the match when Hannah Gordon held off Erin Yamamoto 6-1, 7-6 (5) at No. 5, and Emily Feldhausen came from behind to edge Natalie Donnelly 4-6, 6-1, (10-7).

“Although she lost in singles, Erin played an excellent match against a great baseliner,” Wright said. “She was able to change her game in the second set and was points away from it going her way.

“I think that low altitude and not enough matches under our belt was our biggest problem. Being able to maintain longer points and find ways to end points off our strings seemed difficult. I'm looking forward to the rest of the matches this week.”

Colorado College returns to action on Saturday when the Tigers face No. 21 Vassar College and La Sierra University at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
