Colorado College snapped a six-match skid and completed a season sweep of Colorado State-Pueblo with an 8-1 victory on Thursday afternoon in Pueblo.
Britt Swenson, Jordan Evans, Deanna Thirkell and Natalie Donnelly won two matches apiece as the Tigers improved 3-7 overall.
“It's really nice to get back in the winning column after a tough streak of opponents,” head coach Perry Wright said” We started a bit slow in doubles, but quickly picked it up.”
The Tigers got off to a solid start by winning all three doubles matches for the first time this season, thanks to Tori Marsh and Deanna Thirkell who overcame a 7-6 deficit to post a 9-7 triumph at the No. 3 contest.
CC was even more dominate during the individual matches, winning five of six points in straight sets.
Erin Yamamoto gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles, and Thirkell clinched the victory by coasting to a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 3.
Wright shuffled the lineup and inserted Britt Swenson at No. 1 singles, and that decision paid off with a 7-5, 6-1 victory.
“The best singles match was at No. 1 where Britt fought off very long rallies against a great pusher,” Wright said. “It seemed like some of the rallies would never end, but Britt generally had the guts and answer to put her opponent away.”
Jordan Evans posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2, while Natalie Donnelly cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4.
Eva Hicks and Tori both won a pair of exhibition matches, combining for an 8-3 doubles victory before prevailing 6-3, 1-6, 10-5 and 7-6 (5), 6-4, respectively, in singles play.
“This should give us a confidence boost as we head into our matches on Thursday,” Wright said.
Colorado College plays host to New Mexico Military Institute in an exhibition at 1 p.m. and Montana State University Billings at 3 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Garden of the Gods Club.
