Erin Yamamoto, Natalie Donnelly and Deanna Thirkell all contributed a pair of victories as Colorado College won the first of four matches at the Rhodes Invitational with a 7-2 triumph over Austin College on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers started quickly when Thirkell and Tori Marsh combined for an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles. That combination has won five of their last six doubles matches and now owns a 5-2 record.
CC picked up a second point when Yamamoto and Donnelly prevailed at No. 2 doubles by a 9-7 count, giving the duo a third-consecutive win and squaring their record at 6-6.
Colorado College's next three points came very quickly.
Sally Bryant cruised to her first singles victory of the season, a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 4 singles. Marsh earned her first career win, a dominating 6-0, 6-2 effort in the No. 6 contest.
“I was very happy to see Tori record her first singles win,” head coach Perry Wright said. “Although her opponent gave up a lot of unforced errors, Tori did a much better job setting up for her shots and being more patient. She shows a great deal of promise.”
Erin Yamamoto sealed the final outcome with her third consecutive win by a 6-0, 6-4 score at No. 5 singles.
At the top of the lineup, Britt Swenson posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles for her fifth win in her last seven contests.
Not to be outdone, Thirkell claimed her fourth consecutive singles match by a 6-2, 6-1 count and leads the team with a 7-6 individual record.
Competing for the day without Jordan Evans, who plays both No. 1 singles and doubles, the Tigers won for the third time in its last four matches and improved to 5-8. Jordan will be in action on Saturday as CC tries to improve its seeding for next week's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship.
Colorado College is back on the court at 8 a.m. for a match against Hendrix College and 3 p.m. to face Oglethorpe University.
