Luetjen nets 28, but CC falls to Colonels

Box Score Senior forward Becky Luetjen poured in a season-high 28 points, but Colorado College was unable to score during the final three minutes and watched Centre College overcome a four-point deficit to escape with a 72-68 victory on Friday night at Reid Gymnasium.

After senior guard Jordy Stephenson gave the Tigers a 68-64 lead, Cailynn West pulled the Colonels to within 68-66 and a three-pointer by Jane Goatley put the visitors ahead for good. CC was unable to connect on a pair of chances to re-gain the lead, and Chelsea Benham added the final three points to put the game away.

Luetjen, who completed her seventh double-double of the season with 10 rebounds, scored 19 points during the first half to help Colorado College build a 34-23 lead with 3:26 to play. The Colonels, however, answered with an 8-3 run to trim their deficit to six points after 20 minutes.

Centre outscored the Tigers, 8-2, to open the second half and tied the game at 39-39 when Benham grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a jumper from the middle of the lane.

Luetjen answered with five consecutive points and CC was up by that same margin after freshman guard Laura Hoffman dialed long distance with an even 13 minutes to play.

Maggie Prewitt scored six of team-high 20 points to spark a 10-4 run that gave the Colonels their first lead of the contest with 11:13 remaining. From that point on, the score was tied three times and neither team led by more than three points until Stephenson scored the Tigers' final bucket.

Benham recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, helping Centre post a 48-34 advantage on the glass. The Colonels offset their 35.5-percent shooting from the floor by making 26 of 29 free throws.

The Tigers, who sank 10 of 11 at the charity stripe, made up some of the difference by draining eight of 20 attempts from 3-point range.

Centre improved to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. CC slipped to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Colorado College returns to action on Sunday when it plays host to Sewanee at noon.
